MARCUS BURY talks about Henri Cartier-Bresson:

This picture took my breath away when I saw it twenty something years ago. A perfect moment, the dawning world holding its breath.
A cloud balancing on an outstretched hand offering a prayer, the nervous look of the seated woman. The four layers of scenic depth joined together by the women in the foreground, and held together by the hands pleading for peace.

This dramatic composition is deftly captured, as with all of Henri’s pictures there are no cheap tricks, just an incredible eye for composition.

The photograph was taken in the midst of violent unrest in Srinagar 1948 when villages were sacked and burned with many people killed.

Marcus Bury, London, July 2003
