EVE ARNOLD talks about Henri Cartier-Bresson and
his work:
I
met Henri Cartier-Bresson in the early 50’s
when I was beginning my photographic work. We
seemed to become instant friends and were often
joined by Inge Morath and various other Magnum
photographers. He gave me a great gift of insight
into him and his work and we have been great friends
for almost 50 years.
At Magnum Henri would examine my pictures and
everything I did – in a sense he really
gave me my photographic education. He didn’t
teach it as such but I learned it as such. He
managed to find in nature what generally only
happens in art. The more I see of him the more
I love him and realise how much he has done for
photography and for me personally.
The picture seen here is mysterious and provocative
and evokes all kinds of personal images within
the viewer. It is what every photograph should
be.
