SASCHA HACKEL talks about Henri Cartier-Bresson:
What is wonderful about this photograph is that,
at first glance, one sees it as one image; looking
at it more closely it becomes clear that there
are three distinct layers in the photograph:
In the background, the graphic windows. In the
middle ground, the caricature fat man in bowler
hat and suit, knee delicately bent. In the foreground,
the extremely cheeky faces of the young boys.
Each layer is different and yet all meld together
so beautifully. What appears at first to be such
a perfectly balanced study of shape and form gradually
reveals its warmth and humanity.
