"The photograph does not necessarily say what is no longer, but only and for certain what has been"

Stephen Inggs is a professor of printmaking at the Michaelis School of Fine Art, University of Cape Town. He has exhibited widely in South Africa and is included in private and corporate collections worldwide.

The new series 'Platteland' captures the vast history and intense beauty of the Karoo, a semi-desert region. This history is evident in the landscape and it is Inggs fascination and intrigue for the traces left behind - both ancient and recent - that has driven him to to make this series of photographs. The marks left behind on the land range from ancient fossils and bushmen rock paintings, to the wire fences erected by farmers in the late 1800's; with each object and layer of history telling a tale of contemporary life through the ages.

The region was covered by an inland sea approximately 250 million years ago yet less than 200 years ago was named 'Karoo' (Place of Great Dryness) by local herdsmen. These changes in climate, along with the human settlers, have resulted in a striking landscape where time seems to stand still; creating a place for quiet introspection that both confronts and inspires the imagination. Inggs creates a visual narrative for us, tracing the paths travelled through the centuries along with his own journey of self-discovery.

This body of work consists of powerful yet delicate large scale photographs, each one hand-coated with silver gelatin emulsion onto 100% cotton mould-made paper, using traditional techniques. The handmade, tactile and physical aspects of this process are used deliberately to underline the references to history, transience and the overlooked object. The final result in each piece is a unique asnd original work of art.
